Recently I was catching up with an old school friend of mine whom I had not met for years. We were pretty close in college, getting up to the usual mischief and pranks. However, for some reason, we lost touch since our college graduation and we haven’t kept in touch since then.

I bumped into my friend Aiden (not his real name) just as I was getting out of the toilet cubicle in an airport while waiting to board a plane, and after a few pats on the shoulder, pleasantries and getting over the incredulous coincidence, we learnt that we are scheduled to be on the same plane.

As luck would have it, I later discovered that the seat next to me on the airplane was empty, and I invited him to come sit next to me.

We spent the next 8 hours catching up on the past 25 years we missed out of in each other’s lives. Same as me, he’s a dad of 2 but he ended up working in the engineering sector while I pursued a job in finance. We quickly rebonded, and what stuck out in our conversations was how much our minds and ideas have changed, specifically our ideas on views on life, relationships, and kids.

This brings me to this post, on what are the top things men over 50 want in a relationship.

While everyone’s list of priorities may differ somewhat, there are a few items that are likely to be near the top for most men over the age of 50. So what are they? Read on to find out!

If you’re a woman over 50, it’s important to know what men in this age group are looking for in a relationship. While every man’s list of priorities may differ somewhat, there are a few items that are likely to be near the top for most men. So what are they? Read on to find out!

One of the most important things that men over 50 want in a long term relationship is honesty. They don’t want to waste their time with someone who isn’t being completely truthful about who they are, what they want, and what they’re looking for.

Another thing that men in this age group tend to value is loyalty. They’ve been through enough relationships to know that loyalty is hard to find, and they don’t want to waste their time with someone who isn’t going to be loyal to them.

Men over 50 also tend to want a woman who is independent and has her own life. They don’t want to be someone’s whole world – they want someone who can hold her own and is comfortable being on her own.

Finally, men in this age group want a woman who is fun to be around. They’ve been through enough relationships where they were bored or unhappy, and they don’t want to repeat that experience. They want someone who is going to make them laugh and enjoy spending time with.

If you can offer these things to a man over 50, you’re likely to find that he’s a great catch!

What do men in their 50s want in a woman?

Although every man’s list of priorities may differ somewhat, there are a few items that are likely to be near the top for most men. So what are they? Read on to find out!

1. A partner who is supportive and understanding

One of the things that men in their 50s often look for in a relationship is a partner who is supportive and understanding. A woman who can be a shoulder to lean on in times of trouble, and who is also willing to lend a listening ear when needed, is often highly valued by men in this age group.

2. A partner who they can communicate openly with

Communication is a key component of a satisfying relationship and is one of the things men over 50 look out for. A good partnership requires effective communication, which is crucial in all relationships.

If you are not able to communicate with your partner, it can lead to misunderstandings and conflict. When you are compatible with your partner, you will be able to communicate effectively and understand each other better.

All relationships have their ups and downs, but having a good communication style can help you deal with disagreements and forge a stronger, healthier relationship.

3. A partner who is loyal and faithful

Loyalty and faithfulness are also key qualities that many men in their 50s look for in a partner.

With so much uncertainty in the world, it’s often comforting for men in this age group to know that they have a partner they can count on and will be there for them at the end of the day no matter what.

4. A partner who maintains her physical attractiveness

While physical attraction is certainly not the only thing that matters to men in their 50s, it is often an important factor. By physical attractiveness, I’m not talking about drop-dead gorgeous with a killer bod.

Instead, men in this age group often appreciate a woman who takes care of herself, practices good hygiene, and maintains a healthy appearance.

5. A partner who is good with budgets and finances

Finally, men in their 50s often prefer to be with a partner who is financially stable and practices financial prudence.

With so many responsibilities and obligations, it can be helpful for men in this age group to have a partner who is responsible with their financial obligations and not overly concerned with material possessions.

Again as an example, one of my wife’s friend is constantly obsessed with being decked out in the latest designer handbags and dining out at expensive restaurants. As a result, finances are always contentious issue within their marriage.

6. A partner who is intelligent and can hold a conversation

Intelligence is also a key quality that many men over the age of 50 look for in a partner.

They want to be able to have stimulating conversations with their significant other and feel like they are dating someone on their own intellect level.

In fact, this quality is more important than physical appearance to a lot of men in their 50s.

7. A partner who is independent

Independence is another trait that is often valued by men over 50 in a partner.

They want to be with someone who is comfortable doing things on their own and is not overly dependent on them.

They want someone who gives them the trust and freedom to live their lives and not be overly clingy and possessive when it’s clearly unfounded.

Most of the time in a group of friends, there will be a guy who found it harder than others to simply go out guilt-free and just have a drink with his friends. Reason – the WIFE.

Unless there had been a previous episode of infidelity, giving a guy space to hang with his friends will make him a happier man, and in turn a better partner to you, we promise.

8. A partner who is loving and affectionate

Affection is also important to many men over 50, who often appreciate a woman who is not afraid to show her love for them.

They want to be with someone who is affectionate, loves them unconditionally, and is there for them no matter what.

9. A partner who shares the same interests

Having similar interests is often important to men over 50, who often want to find a partner with whom they can share similar hobbies and passions like golf, tennis, dancing, or a love of gourmet food or chilling out with red wine.

Research shows that couples who shared hobbies were more likely to report higher levels of satisfaction with their relationship.

10. A partner who is family-oriented

Many men over 50 also prefer to be with a partner who is family-oriented. They want to be with someone who values relationships and enjoys spending time with their loved ones.

They want to be with a partner whose family is top priority in their hearts and mind.

11. A partner who is easy to get along with

Another common priority for men in their 50s is finding a partner who is easy to get along with.

They want to be with someone whom they can enjoy spending time with and who will not jump at the smallest thing.

12. A partner who is patient and understanding

Being understanding and patient is also a key quality that many men over 50 look for in a partner. They want to be with someone who is willing to give them the time and space they need, even if it means time away from them.

Men often need time alone to be in their own thoughts, and they have moments where they need to retreat to their “man cave”, which can be in the form of chilling out with a beer in front of the TV or reading a book in the bath, or taking a long shower.

In fact, I have a friend whose only time alone is the 10-15 minutes he gets in the car driving to and from work. The moment his car hits the front driveway on his way home, his wife comes running out and dumps their young teenagers to him so she can have her time working out or being with her friends. According to him, if he needs to have nights out with his friends, she “loses it”.

13. A partner who is supportive

Supportiveness is another common trait that men over 50 value in a partner. They want to be with someone who is supportive of their goals and is there for them during the good times and the bad.

Years ago I know a friend who was working in sales and making a pretty good living. However, his dream is to work in physiotherapy. An opportunity came up during that time for him to get a scholarship to study and eventually pursue a career in physiotherapy. However, that would mean a drastic decrease in salary for a few years.

His lovely wife not only wholeheartedly supported his decision but decided to take up a second job working evenings as a dental assistant and put their vacation plans on hold for the next few years to allow him to pursue his dream.

14. A partner who has a great sense of humor

A great sense of humor is another common quality that men over 50 look for in a partner. They want to be with someone who they can share a laugh with and who does not take life so seriously.

This will also mean fewer arguments and fights. After all, nothing defuses a tense situation like laughing at it.

15. A partner who doesn’t need to be “right” all the time

Flexibility is also a key quality for many men over 50, who often appreciate a partner who does not need to win every argument.

The need to be right is due to the need to win an argument. Additionally, if you want to win an argument, your partner must lose. And why would you want your partner to lose if you truly care about them?

You can experience a creative and stimulating setting where you and your partner can both learn and develop when you let go of the urge to be correct. Additionally, it fosters a secure environment in which you and your spouse may rely on one another to use good communication and compassionate listening skills.

16. A partner who is down to earth and reliable

Reliability is also an important quality for many men over 50, who often want to be with someone they can count on. Someone who will do what they say they will do, and someone who will be where they say they will be.

If for example you say you will pick up their dry cleaning for that last-minute important event that they need to attend that night, they need to trust that you will do it. If they need you to be there with them for the doctor’s appointment, you need to show up for them.

17.Emotional compatibility

Regardless of age, a man is looking for emotional support. However, the emotional needs of men over 50 are even bigger.

Almost all of us are seeking a safe place to be in our everyday lives. When you are in a relationship, it is important to be with someone who you are compatible with.

This means that you have similar interests and can relate to each other on a deeper level and are able to support each others emotional needs. If you are not compatible with your partner, it can lead to problems in the relationship.

So it’s extremely important to consider emotional compatibility when it comes to your choice of partners.

Conclusion

To summarise, the top things men over 50 want in a relationship are the 3 Cs. Companionship, Compatibility, and Communication. These are the three pillars that hold up any strong and lasting relationship.

While these are all important factors in any relationship, it become even more so as we men get older.

If you can provide your partner with these things, you can be sure you’re on your way to having a happy and fulfilling relationship, growing old together.

After all, didn’t the marriage vows say “Till death do us part?”
